One of the reasons I like this forum is people here seem to cover a LOT of different ground (not just film making)

Hmmmm...I (personally) think its more along the lines of:

If you are going to have MP3 players, washing machines, designer colours and fancy cars etc, then someone somewhere will pay the price.
Its the laws of Karma, man.
You cant have "Haves" without "Have Nots".

I consider modern conveniences to be:

Access to food and clean water
Healthcare
Education
Employment
A Welfare State
Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Freedom from fear

I-Pods, Apple Mac's, Burger King, Cars? Not even close my friend, not even close.
